  Harmful Ingredients

September 6, 1997, Cosmetics Proposal Draws Fire

An article in The Boston Globe cited Senator Edward M. Kennedy's statement that "The General Accounting Office has identified more than 125 cosmetic ingredients suspected of causing cancer- along with others that may cause birth defects."

Below are a short list of potentially harmful ingredients that may be in your personal care and cosmetic products.

ALCOHOL

An ingredient found in ingestible products, alcohol may cause body tissues to become more vulnerable to carcinogens. According to The National Institutes of health, studies show that mouthwashes with 25% alcohol or more have been implicated in oral and throat cancers. Men have a 60% higher risk and women a 90% higher risk, than those that don't use a mouthwash with alcohol.

ALPHA HYDROXY ACID

Skin care products containing AHA exfoliate not only dead skin layers, but the skin's protective layer as well. Long-term use could result in skin damage by leaving premature skin exposed to the sun.

ALUMINUM

The active ingredient in antiperspirants. Strong evidence links aluminum to Alzheimer's disease. Clogs the sweat glands and traps in toxins that are normally release in the underarm.

ANIMAL FAT (TALLOW)

Animal fats and lye are the main ingredients in bar soaps. May act as a breeding ground for bacteria. Also can strip the skin's protective layer.

BUTANE and PROPANE

An aerosol propellant used in hair sprays. Is flammable and in high doses may be a narcotic or cause asphyxiation.

COLLAGEN

The collagen found in most skin care products is derived from animal skin and ground up chicken feet. Forms a layer that may suffocate the skin.

Diethanolamine (DEA) Cocamide, Lauramide, Oleamide

Used as a solvent, emulsifier and detergent. Can react with other ingredients in personal care products to form carcinogens like nitrosamines. DEA itself has been reported to cause kidney and liver cancer.

ELASTIN

Similar in it's structure to collagen, it is derived from animal sources and has similar effects.

FLUORIDE

A so called "cavity fighter" is more toxic than lead and about equal in toxicity to arsenic. Studies show it to be a potent carcinogen and may reduce IQ in children. Recent studies show a link between fluoride and Osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

LANOLIN

Made from the oil in sheep's wool. Often contaminated by pesticides used to treat insects and ticks on the sheep. Can be carcinogenic.

PETROLATUM or MINERAL OIL

Refined crude oil, highly carcinogenic. Found in baby oil, lotions, moisturizers and alike consumer products.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Has been shown to cause dermatitis, kidney and liver abnormalities. Inhibits skin cell growth. Very irritating to the skin. Used as a humectant in moisturizers, skin creams, shave gels and deodorants. It is also the main ingredient in antifreeze and brake fluid.

Salt

Very drying, irritating and corrosive. Used in shampoos as a thickener. Could corrode the scalp or skin.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

A surfactant (detergent). Penetrates the skin and builds up in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain. Could retard the healing process, cause cataracts, roughen skin, and lead to improper eye development in children under 6 years of age. Can react with nitrogen bearing compounds to form nitrosamines. SLS is also used as engine degreaser, garage floor cleaner and car wash soap.

Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)
Same effects as SLS, only much harsher. Contains ether. Could be contaminated with dioxins, a potent carcinogen.

Talc

Found to cause ovarian cancer. Similar in it's structure to asbestos, and often contaminated with asbestos. Talc is used in baby powder, make-up, antiperspirants, feminine hygiene sprays, etc.
